The Peer and the Puppet (When Rivals Play #1) by B.B. Reid

4 Stars

When Four Archer runs into some trouble, her mom immediately pulls the rug out from under her and relocates them, to somewhere she will never fit in. Blackwood Keep is unlike any place she has ever visited, and everyone there seems to be lorded over by the one and only, Ever McNamara… her new psuedo-stepbrother.

Ever wants nothing to do with Four and her gold digger of a mother. Except that there is something about his unsophisticated new roommate that he just can’t seem to stay away from. Determined to make her life hell, he never counted on being unable to keep his hands… and his mouth off of her…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a really great book, when Four and Ever go head to head in their war of wills; complicated and impossible doesn’t begin to describe their relationship. And when they move past hating each other and resort to kissing each other, things are destined for disaster…
Four is a strong and fearless young woman who looks Ever straight in the eyes (or punches his eye) and refuses to bow down to him like the rest of his underlings. Growing up with a mother who needs her in an unhealthy way, Four is used to taking care of her and picking up the pieces when things go wrong. But, in moving to Blackwood Keep, Four is now in unknown territory, and living with a man who is the coldest jerk she has ever met. Her already unhappy move has just taken a turn for the worst, but she will fight back until the inevitably messy end…
Ever has been dealing with some dangerous people in order to get to the bottom of a disappearance. With his utmost focus needed, when Four starts showing up everywhere with her unwanted presence, she is just adding fuel to his already stoked fury of her existence. Ever has a lot riding on his shoulders and a distraction like Four may just ruin everything…
I love B.B. Reid! She writes such fantastic anti-heroes, all of whom you can’t help but root for in all of their underhanded alpha tactics, and Ever is one of the best. Four is strong and refuses to take his abuse (well, much of it), which may just be the catalyst for Ever’s undivided and unwanted attention…
Secrets, danger, and a forbidden love affair is a lot to deal with, but will Four and Ever find a way to be together, or are they destined to keep their love hidden for the sake of… everyone
