Dr. Strange Beard (Winston Brothers #5) by Penny Reid

4.5 Stars

Roscoe Winston has been avoiding his childhood BFF successfully for the last 10 years. But, his fantastic avoidance tactics seem to be failing him when he discovers not only has Simone Payton unexpectedly moved back to town, but she is also suddenly showing up just about everywhere he happens to be…

Simone Payton is working undercover on a very important case and it is imperative for her to spend as much time with Roscoe as she possibly can, whether she wants to be in his presence or not. After being unceremoniously dropped as his friend all those years ago, she isn’t delighted to be tasked with getting close to him once more.

With a love that might have been destined from the very beginning, Roscoe and Simone now have many forces working against them and their recently rekindled friendship. But, they will soon find that the greatest wedge of all may be their own precautionary personalities…

I love the Winston Brothers so much, I feel like I am treated to visiting old friends with every new book released, and Dr. Strange Beard was not only a fantastic addition to this already amazing series, but it also ended up being a total game changer in the Winston family saga…

Simone is a successful and amazing woman who upon her return to Green Valley thinks she wants nothing to do with Roscoe ever again. Until she has him in her arms and she realizes that not only has she truly been missing his friendship all these years, but discovers an attraction to him that she never knew existed…

Simone and her family have lived in Green Valley their entire lives, but still find themselves a focus of inherent racism from one of the towns own. The way this amazing family (and Penny Reid) approach this still inconceivably widespread issue is admirable and incredibly courageous.

Roscoe is a soulful, remarkable man who devotes his life to his career as a veterinarian and to helping as many animals as he possibly can. He loves his family dynamic and the way their lives have expanded in recent years. He also battles with having a dehabilitating eidetic memory, where he is almost haunted by the replaying of every single moment or conversation that has ever happened in his presence.

When Roscoe and Simone share themselves with each other like they have never been able to do with anyone else, their lives will finally be complete in a way neither person ever thought possible. But, when the relationship is still missing something as important as absolute truth, will their inexplicable love finally be enough…

As always, some of my favorite things about every Penny Reid book is not only her refreshing, quirky characters, but also the utter education and new outlook I come away with from every meticulously researched and compelling additon within an already captivating story.

I loved this story, it was a beautiful second chance romance with the heavy reality of life that keeps it authentic and grounded, but also the shining beacon of love that guides you through the worst of it all…

I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
