Promise Me You by Marina Adair

4 Stars

When faced with a life altering diagnosis, Mackenzie Hart has some hard decisions to make, and letting go of the man she loves but could never have, is the hardest one. Unwilling to be a burden, she disappears on him and the people she is closest with.

Hunter Kane is a rising country music star, but when his closest friend, the woman who co-writes his songs, vanishes from his life, not only do his album sales struggle, but his entire personal life as well. Worried and confused, he doesn’t expect her to suddenly drop back in, living with a completely new reality that he knew nothing about…

This was such a heartfelt and emotional read. With Mackenzie’s struggle with losing her vision and the changes her life undergoes in the process, I was drawn to the entire storyline and the unique situations it represented.

Although Mackenzie has endured many difficulties in learning to maneuver life without vision, she has found solace in her music. And with that, writing songs for the man who used to mean so much to her, as long as she can remain anonymous. After so much time has passed since Mackenzie removed herself from Hunter’s life, when they are thrown back together, neither of them know what to expect. But, they soon find the feelings they had always harbored for one another have never dissipated.

With his personal life and career going through a major transformation, Hunter is at a crossroads he never saw coming. After finding Mack again, and finally being confronted with the reason she disappeared on him, he decides that he will never let her vanish in that way again. Mack means everything to him, and he will stop at nothing to protect her and help her to see how much she means to him, blind or not, she is still the same woman he could never get over.

I loved Mackenzie, she was smart and very determined to do things on her own, but she soon learns that she has to accept help from time to time, and that letting people in may not be the burden she always feared that it would be. And Hunter, while being a big deal in the music industry, is ready to do anything he can to help his old friend and the woman who has always meant so much to him.

From Mack’s struggles to adjust to her new everyday normal, to Hunter’s mission to help her while still being a welcome, yet highly distracting part of her life, there are many hurdles these two will face on their way to HEA.
