Conor O’Callahan is a man who has earned a second chance at life, and he is unflinchingly loyal to his brothers who took him in. So when he is tasked with keeping an eye on a possible… complication… he doesn’t hesitate to agree to to do what has to be done.
Ivy is a woman on the run. Desperate for a job that will help her earn enough money to leave town forever, she spends her time hanging around the local Irish mob-owned strip club, for a chance at employment, and also for the protection it represents.
Ivy just wants to move on with her life after escaping the circumstances that have left her in her current situation, but to Conor, she is one complicated liability…
Conor and Ivy’s story was a quick and sexy tale set in the dark and gritty world of the Boston Underworld series. From a death sentence to a marriage of convenience, Conor and Ivy not only have to get to know each other as husband and wife, but to also navigate the dangers that have not disappeared with Ivy’s sudden relationship change.
Ivy’s life was forever changed when she caught the eye of a deranged and very bad man. After his death, she lives in hiding from the rest of his crew and is desperate to find a job to save enough money to leave town forever. When she meets Conor, he makes no attempt to disguise his disdain for her, regardless of his complete ignorance of her circumstances.
Conor takes one look at the skinny and desperate for money Ivy, and he knows exactly what her issues are. At least he thinks he does. With his initial judgement clouding his opinion, it isn’t until he follows her that he finds out just what he is dealing with when he was told to “take care” of her. And when things change, the only way he can see to help Ivy once and for all, is for her to marry… him.
I really liked the premise of this story, and Ivy and Conor’s characters were extremely well written and realistically flawed. While a quick read (although pretty long for a novella) the drama of Ivy’s past is most of the focus and the driving need for their quick marriage. I was a little disappointed with the relationship progression itself, it had a definite insta-love vibe, and their eventual realization of love was never fully authentic feeling.
